Scientific Achievements

1. The aspects of the current geo-hydrological studies have been defined, polystructural approach to the study of water balance and water resources has been shown.

>> 2. Hydrological role of landscape heterogeneities in the permafrost soils of Eastern Siberia has been shown.
>>
>> 3. The changes in water balance elements in the nodes of the grid 10x10 for latitudinal band between 400 North and South for the Holocene optimum and with a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere have been calculated. It has been found out that macroscale evaporation deviation fields are more homogenious than deviation fields of the river runoff and precipitation.
>>
>> 4. A model for the calculation of the monthly water balance of the river basin for the conditions of the climate change in the Holocene and with a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere has been designed and tested for the Volga basin.
>>
>> 5. The concept of the altitude-dimensional water balance differentiation of territory has been created. On its basis and with a hydrological perspective four periods have been defined in the landscape system of the Russian Plain : I - natural landscapes; II - spontaneously modified landscapes in the pre-revolutionary period (until 1917); III - transformed during the Soviet period landscapes ; IV - the post-Soviet period.

>> 6. The particularities of formation and occurrence of extreme hydrological situations (high water, water shortages, water pollution) on the territory of Russia has been defined.

>> 7. Since the beginning of the 1960s. until now 4 periods which differ in the level of anthropogenic load on water resources have been defined for the territory of Russia. The decrease in the anthropogenic impact on water resources in the 1990s. has become one of the important reasons of the increase in the annual runoff and changes in its intra-annual distribution towards the summer and especially winter increase where climatic factors have played the main role, particularly winter precipitation and air temperature growth.

>> 8. The current and estimated impact of forestry on water resources of the Russian Plain has been evaluated.

>> 9. The impact of anthropogenic and climatic factors on the runoff of the Lena river, the Volga and the Don has been evaluated. Scenarios for the future state of water resources of these rivers, regarding possible climate change and economic activity, until the 2030 have been developed.

>> 10. The anthropogenic impact on water resources of the Moscow river in the past 150 years has been estimated.
>>
>> 11. Morphometric characteristics of reservoirs of the Moskvoretskaya water system have been evaluated.

>> 12. Geoecological correspondance of water catchment systems and reservoirs of the world has been estimated. Potential waterworks destruction danger has been assessed.

>> 13. Сurrent pressure on water resources of the world has been estimated. The analysis of the trends in water resources use in Russia and in the world in recent decades, the similarities and differences in anthropogenic impact on water resources of Russia and other countries has been made.

>> 14. The conceptual framework for water protection zoning and small rivers water resources management has been created .

>> 15. The principles of formation of anaerobic layer of the hydrosphere have been found.

>> 16. A new field in geography - marine environmental geography - has been developed. The estimation of the state of the seas surrounding Russia has been made within this field.

>> 17. The substantiation of the Flood as a real paleohydrological event that occurred 10-16 thousand years ago in the Ponto-Caspian region has been given.
